In Our Muck And Mire
If You, Lord, should keep account of and treat [us according to our] sins, O Lord, who could stand? ~ Psalm 130:3.
I have done some things in the past that I am not proud of. I'm sure we all have.
Aren't you glad that God doesn't treat us according to our sins?
Why doesn't He treat us according to our sins? Because even though, we sinned, He loved us enough to send His Son--His blameless, sinless, Son--to be a sacrifice for us. He took on Himself our sins--past, present, and yes, even our future sins.
We are in right-standing with God because of it.
What does that mean? It means that Jesus' shed blood puts us in right-standing with God. We did nothing to earn it. In fact, we could not be good enough or do enough to earn us that position. Only Jesus' shed blood puts us there.
When God sees us, He doesn't see our laundry list of sins. He sees Jesus' shed blood that covers us.
God loves us enough to forgive us. Shouldn't we do the same to those in our lives? Shouldn't we have the same compassion that God does for us?
We are supposed to be imitating God, and if God can forgive us in our muck and mire, then we should attempt to do the same thing.
Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a decision. It is a choice. When you forgive others, you have to forgive them by faith. Make that decision. Your feelings will catch up with your decision eventually.
We must be like our God. We must forgive. That doesn't mean that we have to continue in that situation and let the person abuse us. No, we don't have to be abused, but we must forgive. You might want to pray for them until your feelings of resentment and hurt disappear. To imitate, God we must forgive.
